Abstract

708,446. Photographic diazotype lithographic plates. KALLE & CO. AKT.-GES. Aug. 30, 1951, No. 20539/51. Class 98(2) A support of superficially saponified cellulose acetate foil is provided with a layer containing a light-sensitive diazo compound which is capable of coupling and which becomes oleophilic under the action of light, such as the diazo compounds (excluding diazo sulphonates) described for a similar purpose in Specification 697,521, exposed, treated with a water soluble azo coupling component containing at least one hydrophilic group capable of reacting with undecomposed diazo compound to form a hydrophilic azo dye which does not accept greasy ink in the presence of water. If desired the exposed product may be washed with water to remove some of the undecomposed diazo compound before the fixing treatment. Advantageously the fixing solution is of pH not greater than 9, and this solution may contain a coupling accelerating agent such as alkali, a buffer salt such as an alkali phosphate, or a softening agent such as glycol or triethylene glycol. Fixing may be effected on the press by adding the coupling component to the fountain solution. High energy coupling, components such as 1-(41-sulphophenyl)-3-methyl-pyrazolone, 2 : 3- dihydroxynaphthalene-6-sulphonic acid, 1 : 8-dihydroxynaphthalene-4-sulphonic acid, 1: 5-dihydroxynaphthalene-3:6-disulphonic acid, 1:8-dihydroxynaphthalene-3 : 6-disulphonic acid, 1-amino-8- hydroxynaphthalene-2:4- or -3:6-disulphonic acid or salts of these, or phloroglucinol, are well suited for the procedure. In two examples a superficially saponified cellulose acetate foil is coated with the zinc chloride double salt of the condensation product of 4-diazo diphenylamine and formaldehyde, dried, exposed under a negative, treated in Example 1 with a solution containing the first, and in Example 2 containing the second of the above listed couplers, and the product is inked up in an offset machine. The positive printing plates are not affected by further exposure to light.
