Abstract

756,277. Diazo sensitized material for making lithographic printing plates. POLYCHROME CORPORATION. Aug. 25, 1954 [Sept. 2, 1953], No. 24770/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 98 (2). A wet strength paper base as of kraft paper, which may have wet strength imparted thereto by treatment with a melamine-formaldehyde condensation product, is provided with a waterproof coating containing a filler, and an outer hydrophilic coating having a basis of a starch derivative and which carries a surface layer of a light-sensitive diazo compound. The waterproof coating may be of aqueous urea formaldehyde resin containing walnut shell flour as filler, and containing aluminium chloride catalyst as catalyst for the resin. A second waterproof coating, also as of aqueous urea formaldehyde resin but which may contain titanium dioxide and oxalic acid may be applied, and the hydrophilic coating may be of starch carbamate and may contain titanium dioxide; all of these coatings being provided on one or both sides of the paper. The diazo sensitizing compound may comprise the formaldehyde condensation product of diazo diphonylamine sulphate. A single application of chemicals as in the known diazo development process is stated to desensitize the non-printing areas and make the image highly ink-receptive and visible.
