Abstract
990,350. Printing surfaces. COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. July 24, 1963 [July 25, 1962], No. 29288/63. Heading B6C. A planographic printing plate blank has on the reverse side to the one carrying the hydrophilic planographic printing coating a pressure-trans. ferable eleophilic layer said layer having a dry clear rub-resistant surface comprising pressuretransferable oleophilic imaging material for transference of ink receptive images to the hydrophilic printing surface of a planographic printing plate blank. By superimposing a plurality of such blanks, imaging of all those below the top one is effected simultaneously in a single operation by applying desired pressures, such as from a typewriter, to the upper coated surface of the top blank. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 a flexible foundation 10 has a hydrophilic printing coating 11 based upon carboxymethyl cellulose and an oleophilic transfer layer 12 applied in the form of an aqueous emulsion. Such a layer may comprise a mixture of ethyl cellulose, mineral oil, Milori blue, methyl alcohol and water. As an alternative the mixture in water may comprise polystyrene emulsion, beeswax, montan wax, oleic acid, triethanolamine, Milori blue and Be Square Wax. A further example employs montan wax, oleic acid, morpholine, carbon black, a surface-active agent (polyoxyalkylene ester) and water. Other surface-active agents which may be used are polypropylene glycol ether and naphthalene sulphonate. In a further embodiment a release coating 13, Fig. 3, may be applied between the foundation 10 and the layer 12. Such coating is preferably based upon a vinyl, vinylidene, acrylic or methacrylic resin and is applied by means of a volatile solvent or dispersing medium, and when set is not soluble in the solvent or dispersing liquid used to apply the layer 12. When working with water-applied transfer layers it is preferable to apply the release layer as an aqueous dispersion or emulsion. According to yet another embodiment the layer 12 may be applied in such a manner as to provide a clear uncoated margin of the foundation 10 around the same. The provision of such a margin prevents the spreading of the layer material 12 across the cut edges of the blanks when the blanks are coated in the form of a wide web and thereafter cut into the desired sizes.
