Abstract

830,623. Planographic printing processes. AGFA A.G. April 12, 1957 [April 18, 1956], No. 12091/57. Class 98(2) Images are produced by. the silversalt diffusion process in an ink-repellent layer that is chemically inert with respect to ferricyanides and ferrocyanides and are treated with an aqueous solution of a ferricyanide in the presence of a soluble metal salt, the metal ion of which is capable of forming a water-insoluble ferrocyanide or ferricyanide, which solution may also contain a complex former to prevent immediate precipitation of the metal ferricyanide, and such treated images are inked up for planographic printing. In Example 1 a silver image as from a line or half-tone original so produced on an anodically treated aluminium plate which may have been dipped beforehand into an aqueous colloidal silver sulphide nuclei solution is introduced after rinsing into a solution containing potassium ferricyanide, cobaltous nitrate, citric acid and sodium citrate, to give the image a violet appearance due to entrained cobalt ferricyanide, and the plate is again rinsed, dried, treated with aqueous ethanolic stearylamine containing sodium carbonate as surface active agent, and after evaporation of the ethanol the plate is rubbed with greasy ink, the latter is dried with talcum and the ink cleared off image-free areas with 4% phosphoric acid, when the plate may be gummed for protection if not to be used immediately for printing. The other six examples are generally similar, differing chiefly by (2) producing the silver image on surfacesaponified acetyl cellulose foil; (3) and (4) using nickelous and uranyl nitrates respectively instead of the cobaltous nitrate of Example 1; (5) producing the silver image on a nuclei containing gelatine layer of a paper foil; (6) using oxalic anions instead of the citric Example 1; and (7) including barium sulphate in the gelatine layer of Example 5 and zinc sulphate instead of cobaltous nitrate. Other soluble ferricyanides and other metal salts for treating the silver image formed in the ink-repellent layer are described.
