648,897. Printing-surfaces. GEVAERT PHOTO-PRODUCTEN N.V. Sept. 9, 1947, No. 24749. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1946. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] Planographic printing-surfaces are obtained by treating a hydrophilic colloid layer mounted on a base with a reducing agent, before or after transferring an inked impression to it, to render the surface lipophilic (grease receptive), and after the surface receives the inked impression it is treated with a lithographic etching solution which may take the form of a solution of gum arabic and the higher valency salt of a metal which has more than one valency, e.g. Cu, Ni, Co, Cr. Example :- water 100 ml., gum arabic 25 grams, CuCl 2 2 grams. The etching fluid renders the non-printing parts of the surface hydrophilic again. The colloid may be gelatine, casein, polyvinyl compounds, polyacryl compounds, polyamides, hydrolysed cellulose esters. Fillers such as silicates, chalk, insoluble sulphates or metal oxides may be added. The reducing agent may be organic compounds as pyrogallol, or pyrocatechol, or inorganic agents, e.g. sodium thiosulphate or sulphite, together with polyhydric alcohols with or without aldehyde, or ketone groups, e.g. glycerol, glucose, &c. A hardening agent may be added to the reducing mixture. Suitable agents are formaldehyde for gelatine &c., and salts of zirconium or borax for polyvinyl compounds. The impression may be produced by hand or mechanically, as by a typewriter and ink ribbon, or photographically, (see Group XX). Specification 547,517 is referred'to.
