Abstract

667,437. Coated paper. ERICKSON, D. R. Feb. 8, 1950, No. 3266/50. Class 96. Paper for printing is coated with a viscous composition of 100 parts of filler, e.g. clay or calcium carbonate, in a solution of 6 to 10 of hydroxy alkyl cellulose, e.g. the ethyl or propyl, in aqueous sodium hydroxide, and immediately after coating precipitating the hydroxy alkyl cellulose (which is insoluble in water) by applying a solution of acid, e.g. a weak organic acid such as acetic, citric, lactic, tartaric, maleic, or oxalic acid, or sulphuric or hydrochloric, or an acid salt, e.g. mono- or di-sodium phosphate, or sodium bisulphate or bicarbonate, or an ammonium salt, e.g. the sulphate, chloride, or carbonate. Such solution may be at 150‹ to 200‹ F., and after passing through it, the paper web may be steamed, e.g. to speed up precipitation of the cellulosic binder, and dissipate any ammonia, it may then be washed with hot water, excess water squeezed out, and dried, e.g. in contact with a high chrome polish roll.
