Abstract
712,606. Photomechanical printing foils. KALLE & CO. AKT.-GES. May 4. 1950 [May 5, 1949], No. 12083/49. Class 98(2) A photosensitive foil or plate suitable for producing positive images from a positive original comprises a hydrophilic surface such as surfacesaponified cellulose ester or paper sensitized with a layer containing a diazo compound of the formula where R is an aryl, aralkyl, higher alkyl or an aroyl residue; Y is O, S, NH or NR 1 where R, is alkyl, aralkyl oraryl; Ar is an aromatic residue and X the equivalent of an anion of an acid or an aldehyde condensation product thereof, or a diazo sulphonate or diazo amino compound derived from either the diazo compound or its aldehyde condensation product, and on the photosensitive layer a coating of water-soluble film-forming material such as gum arabic, cellulose ethers, polyuronic acids or their salts, dextrine, pectin, sodium alginate, guar resin, polyvinyl resin, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, water-soluble urea resins, protein solutions, polyethylene oxide or sodium metaphosphate. In use the coated foil is exposed in conjunction with an original, if desired by reflex focusing, treated with aqueous liquid such as water containing a salt or dye to remove the water-soluble coating, dried and re-exposed to light without an original; after which application of water. and greasy ink leads to production of images of the same kind as the original. In five specific examples the diazo compounds are (1) the zinc chloride double salt of the condensation product of 4-diazo-diphenylamine sulphate with paraformaldehyde, (2) the diazo compound of 4-amino - 1 (N - [2 : 3:4:6-tetraehlorobenzyl])- aminobenzene, (3) the diazo compound of 4-amino- 1-(N-2 : 6-dichlorobenzyl)-amino-benzene, (4) the reaction product of p-diazo-diphenylether with paraformaldehyde, and (5) the same as (1); the water-soluble film-forming coatings comprise protein, dextrine and polyvinyl alcohol; and the final treatment is with water containing the dyestuff Sirius Light Blue G. Numerous other diazo compounds, and dyestuffs for use in the final treatment are quoted. Example (5) describes production of the printing plate by reflex printing directly from an opaque original. Specifications 697,521, 698,040 and 707,378 are referred to.
