Abstract

655,752. Printing-surfaces; damping lithographic plates. WARREN CO., S. D. Nov. 9, 1948, No. 29104. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1947. [Class 100 (ii)] The hydrophilic surface in the unimaged areas of a planographic printing plate contains a water-insoluble compound of a metal acting with a valency of 2 or more, the compound being obtained by reaction between a water-soluble compound incorporated into the surface before imaging and a water-soluble salt of the metal applied after imaging; impermeability to water is thereby increased without affecting the adhesion of the image. The plate may be of paper having on at least one side a colloid surface of film-forming material (e.g. clay, blanc fixe, &c. dispersed in a film-former, with or without a light top wash of clear film former) incorporating a phosphate, oxalate, sulphate, borate, citrate or chromate; the metal salt solution may be buffered to a pH value within the range 3 to 7. In one example a paper base having an undercoat of clay 100, ammonium caseinate 18, di-methylolurea 1.5 (parts by weight) is used, the water-soluble reagent being introduced in the top hydrophilic aqueous wash; this may contain sodium alginate and di-ammonium phosphate (with an after-imaging wash of a zinc formate solution), or carboxymethyl cellulose and ammonium sulphate (using an after-imaging wash of barium chloride solution). The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the incorporation of the water-soluble salt of the metal in the surface before imaging, the reagent being applied after imaging, e.g. included in the wet-out solution; the plate may be imaged, e.g. photographically, after completion of the reaction; a melamineformaldehyde resin-containing paper plate with a clay-casein-ammonia coating may be washed over with an aqueous zinc acetate solution, and after imaging with an aqueous di-ammonium phosphate solution; other top hydrophilic coatings and reaction components referred to are : guar gum, zinc acetate and formaldehyde, with mono-ammonium phosphate or ammonium borate or citrate; gum arabic and calcium acetate, with ammonium oxalate; guar gum and lead acetate, with ammonium chromate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
