Abstract

An aqueous coating composition comprises (1) at least one member of the group consisting of starch, cellulose, a starch or cellulose derivative containing primary hydroxyl groups, or a protein containing reactive amino groups, (2) a pigment, and (3) a water-soluble polyethylenepolyamine-dihaloalkane-urea-formaldehyde reaction product. Specified constituents (1) are corn and amioca starches, casein and a -proteins in general, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Specified constituents (2) are clays, especially china clay, zinc oxide, calcium carbonate, diatomaceous earth, fuller's earth, satin white, calcium silicate, barium sulphate and titanium dioxide. Specified constituents (3) are described in Specification 724,097 and may be prepared by reacting a polyethylene polyamine having a molecular weight of at least 146, e.g. triethylene tetramine, with a dihaloalkane of 2 or 3 carbon atoms, the halogen being preferably chlorine or bromine, and condensing the soluble reaction product in turn with urea and formaldehyde. The aqueous coating compositions can be cured to produce hard water-insoluble compositions. Ammonium chloride, dichromate, and phosphate, zinc chloride, acetate, borate and dichromate, copper sulphate and hydrogen peroxide are specified curing catalysts. When paper is coated with an aqueous coating composition, as described above, and the latter is cured in situ at about 280 DEG F. products useful as planographic printing plates are obtained.
