Abstract

510,273. Surgical setting bandages. MEYER, G. H. Feb. 1, 1938, No. 3145. [Class 81 (ii)] Plaster bandages are made by stirring plaster powder or anhydrous calcium sulphate and an aqueous solution of binding media which may be preheated, into a paste, which is thinly spread on mull, gauze, or the like and then immediately heated on hot plates at 110‹C. in order to inhibit setting, the heating being then continuously increased up to at least 170-180‹C. to drive off any absorbed water. Suitable binding agents are gum arabic, gluten, tragacanth, glue, albuminous substances of the gelatose type, cellulose derivatives and artificial resins such as polyvinyl-alcohol soluble in water or swelling up therein to gelatinous solutions, cellulose glycollic acid and its derivatives, alkyl celluloses which are soluble or adapted to swell up in water and which have an alkyl content below 20 per cent., and water soluble urea formaldehyde compounds.
