Abstract

A tobacco sheet contains tobacco dust and up to 20% by weight of the tobacco of carboxy-methyl cellulose which also contains a physiologically harmless acid in a concentration such that a 6.5% solution prepared from a newly produced sheet has a pH of between 3.5 and 6. Preferably the carboxy-methyl cellulose is present in an amount of 12-18% by weight of the tobacco. The acid used may be citric, tartaric, lactic or phosphoric acid. The foil is produced by dispersing dry, finely ground tobacco with water to form an aqueous tobacco suspension, separately producing an aqueous paste of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, mixing and homogenizing the tobacco suspension and the carboxymethyl cellulose paste to form an aqueous tobacco paste, forming the paste into a film, drying the film to form a self-sustaining sheet and ageing the tobacco sheet, the acid being added to the aqueous paste of carboxy-methyl cellulose or to the tobacco paste in a concentration such that the aqueous tobacco paste (equivalent to a 6.5% solution prepared from a newly produced sheet) assumes a pH of 3.5-6.
