Abstract

A method of making a cigarette filter material comprises the steps of washing shreds of tobacco leaves and stalks with water, bleaching the shreds, impregnating them with an aqueous solution of aluminium sulphate, so that they take up 0.001-1.0% of their dry weight of aluminium sulphate calculated as aluminium, and impregnating the wet mass with an aqueous solution of sodium silicate. The tobacco mass is then washed and dried to produce a filter material. Quantitative examples are given.
