Abstract

Filter tip for cigarette, containing - in addition to optional tobacco - a dried and chopped vegetable matter such as coltsfoot, hazel leaf and maize. The vegetable matter is preferably expanded and resistance to draught is very great, thereby permitting a high degree of ventilation with improved filter efficiency.

FILTERING NOZZLE FOR TOBACCO SMOKE AND OTHER MATERIAL A

TO SMOKE.

  The invention relates to filter tips for ciga-

  rettes and similar products, such as cigars, pipes and the like, using a vegetable material for smoking, tobacco or other. Filters based on cellulose acetate fiber, the most commonly used in the tobacco industry, have the disadvantage of having, at their visible end,

  a slice not in accordance with the wishes of the attacked

  with the natural look of cut tobacco.

  It is known to produce cigarettes having a filter tip made of tobacco, possibly treated to

  It is also known to increase the pulling resistance of the nozzle, to compensate for the additional pressure drop introduced by the ventilation, either by increasing the filling density of the nozzle (US Patent No. 3,046,994), or by using, to constitute the mouthpiece, a mixture of tobacco preferably containing

  more than 40% expanded tobacco (US Patent No. 4,726,385).

  The first method significantly increases the cost of cigarettes, while the second complicates the making

  cigarettes on commonly used machines.

  In both cases, the intrinsic filtration efficiency

remains limited.

  The subject of the invention is a nozzle with reduced or even zero expanded tobacco content, endowed with a high draft resistance which allows a high degree of ventilation,

  while having improved filtration efficiency.

  The tip according to the invention is characterized mainly-

  ment by the fact that it is made up at least partially-

  ment of a dried and chopped vegetable material having the appearance of tobacco and with an acceptable taste, and having,

  once compacted, properties of retention of pro-

  unwanted smoke and resistance

  significantly higher than that of

common unexpanded tobacco.

  According to a preferred embodiment, said vegetable material

  tale consists either of coltsfoot, or of hazelnut leaf, or of corn leaves, or of corn silage (leaves and stems), or

  a mixture of these materials, whether or not with tobacco added.

  In an advantageous embodiment, a certain pro-

  portion of said vegetable matter is expanded.

  In all the examples, cigarettes were made

  non-ventilated with a 13 mm long filter tip

  a tobacco column 57 mm long,

  laid with a common mixture of unexpanded tobacco.

  The figures given in the table are the resistance to draft RT of the filter nozzle alone, the compactness Ec of the product constituting the nozzle, measured by the depression of a jaw expressed in hundredths of mm, the filling density DR of the constitutive product of the nozzle, expressed in grams per liter, the efficiency G of retention in tars and the efficiency N of retention in nicotine, measured for the whole of the cigarette and expressed by comparison with a control cigarette without filter, having the same total length as the sample and composed of the same tobacco mixture as the tip

  made from 100% unexpanded tobacco leaves, 100% expanded tobacco leaves and

% of expanded tobacco ribs.

  Sample No 1 relates to a cigarette whose filter tip is made of 100% non-expanded coltsfoot, Sample No 2 a cigarette whose filter tip is made of 100% expanded coltsfoot, Sample No 3 a cigarette whose filter tip is made of 100% unexpanded hazel leaves, sample No 4 a cigarette whose filter tip is made of 100% expanded hazel leaves, sample No 5 a cigarette whose l filter tip 4 - is made from 100% corn silage (leaves and

expanded silage.

  This first part of the table shows that, surprisingly, all the vegetable materials which appear therein provide, even in the unexpanded state, resistance to the pulling of the filter nozzle greater than that of the

  tobacco, even expanded, for filling densities

  wise (the filling densities are the maximum values

  males that could be obtained, for the different pro-

  duits, with the machine used for making cigarettes) significantly higher than those it has

  been possible to get with expanded tobacco.

  The expansion has the effect of providing even greater draft resistances (except for corn

  silage, the filling density of which was

  considerably weaker when it was expanded).

  The retention efficiency of tar and nicotine is particularly good for coltsfoot and

hazel leaves.

  Sample No 7, the tip of which contains 84% tussi-

  expanded foam and 16% unexpanded tobacco leaves, shows that performance is still quite

  acceptable with the addition of tobacco in small quantities

  The same is true for samples No 8 (16%

  unexpanded tobacco leaves, 42% expanded rib

  and 42% expanded coltsfoot) and 9 (16% unexpanded tobacco leaves, 21%

  expanded tobacco, 42% expanded ribs and 21% tus-

  expanded silage), which show that the effect of expanded coltsfoot on the increase in draft resistance

  is more important than that of expanded tobacco leaves

sées. -

  Dried and chopped coltsfoot, expanded with the same techniques

  than those used for tobacco, or even unexpanded tobacco, exhibits retention efficiency and resistance to draft which are probably linked to its

  particular texture (presence of trichomes).

  Sample No 10 (16% unexpanded tobacco leaves

  (21% expanded tobacco leaves, 42% expanded ribs, 21% un-expanded silage corn)

still satisfactory.

  In an eleventh sample, not shown in the table, 75% of a common mixture of non-tobacco was used

  expanded and 25% unexpanded hazelnut leaves.

  The RT pull resistance obtained for the filter tip

  only was 114 and the filling density 309.

  Adjusting the relative proportions of tobacco and other vegetable matter, in addition to giving the desired taste to the cigarette, provides an additional means of adjusting the pull strength according to the desired retention efficiency, to achieve cigarettes

  "light", even "ultra-light".

Claims (4)

Claims   1 filter nozzle for tobacco smoke or other smoking material, characterized in that it consists at least partially of a dried and chopped vegetable material having the appearance of tobacco and with an acceptable taste, and having,   once compacted, properties of retention of pro-   unwanted smoke and resistance   significantly higher than that of common unexpanded tobacco.   2 filter tip according to claim 1,   characterized in that said vegetable material is constituted   killed, either by coltsfoot, or by hazelnut leaf, or by corn husks, or by corn silage (leaves and stems), or by a mixture of these materials.   3 filter tip according to claim 1 or 2,   characterized in that said vegetable material is expan- see.   4 Filter tip according to one of the claims 1 to 3,   characterized in that it also contains tobacco.
