Abstract

A filter plug for cigarettes, or a rod for cutting up into filter plugs, consist of an extruded porous mass of paper pulp, or of a moulded or extruded porous mass of cellulose acetate or viscose or a mixture thereof, with or without cellulosic fibres such as cotton or wood fibres. When paper pulp is used, it is extruded in the form of wet pulp fairly thick in consistency and is supported while being dried, for example by a stationary perforated pipe. The cellulose acetate or viscose is moulded or extruded in the same way as artificial sponges are formed. The mass is preferably provided with longitudinal passageways for smoke, either by providing wires in the mould or by subsequently piercing the moulded or formed filter plugs. The porous mass after formation may be enclosed in a paper wrapping to make the filter plug or the rod. The Provisional Specification also mentions the formation of filter plugs by moulding from paper pulp.
