Abstract

528,190. Cigarette paper. WHITELEY, E. O. April 21, 1939, No. 12004. [Class 96] [Also in Group IV] Cigarette paper is made with, e.g. 8 to 20 per cent. of fire-resistant fibres, e.g. cellulose fibres treated with colloidal solutions of sodium silicate, or with water-suspended fractions of clay gels, filaments of glass or of extruded colloidal clay such as bentonite, added to the paper pulp, ash being supported, e.g. by a fused framework of glass filaments as a cigarette made with such paper burns. Glass fibres used may be 5 microns diameter and 3 to 4 mms. long and made from potassium and calcium silicates and boron oxide, and may be added at the beaters, or at or near the wire-cloth, they may be pre-treated by coating with hygroscopic substances, e.g. glycerol, or with licorice or tobacco extracts. Up to 1 per cent. of rubber, chlorinated rubber or synthetic rubber may also be added to the pulp, e.g., as latex; any objectionable odour due thereto may be minimized by the inclusion of magnesium, potassium, or sodium nitrate. The paper may include 4 per cent. of calcium carbonate. Wetting agents, e.g. sulphated lauryl or oleyl alcohols or sodium salts of alkylated aryl sulphonates, or glycerol may facilitate admixture of the fibre. According to the Provisional Specification purified or roasted asbestos fibres may be used.
