Abstract

A filter filling for cigarettes, cigars, and tobacco pipes and having longitudinally extending passageways or cavities therein is formed by extruding through an orifice a solution of cellulose derivative in a suitable solvent (preferably together with fibrous material such as finely divided cotton or wood pulp) and also passing through said orifice streams of coagulating fluid from a plurality of jets and then coagulating the cellulose derivative. Viscose may be used for the filter filling and coagulation effected in an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid and sodium sulphate, the rod being allowed if desired to remain in the coagulating bath for some time for completion of the coagulation to be effected, or a solution of cellulose acetate and/or formate in acetone may be employed with water or other suitable coagulant. Inert fillers such as calcium carbonate and kieselguhr, or plasticizers such as tricresyl phosphate or triacetin may be added to the compositions. The extrusion device is preferably of such aperture that the coagulated rod needs only to be cut to the desired lengths.ALSO:A filter filling for cigarettes, cigars, and tobacco pipes and having longitudinal passageways or cavities therein is formed by extruding through an orifice a solution of cellulose derivative in a suitable solvent (preferably together with fibrous material such as finely divided cotton or wood pulp) and also passing through said orifice streams of coagulating fluid from a plurality of jets and then coagulating the cellulose derivative.
