Abstract

1,240,560. Tubular regenerated cellulose dialysis membranes. FILMFABRIK WOLFEN VEB. 13 Aug., 1969, No. 40526/69. Heading B5B. Tubular regenerated cellulose dialysis membranes plasticized with glycerol and/or sorbitol are made by extruding a viscose containing 5 to 9% of cellulose through an annular extrusion orifice into an aqueous spinning bath containing 5-20% of sulphuric acid, 10 to 20% of sodium sulphate and 0-15% of ammonium sulphate to form a tube or tubular film. of regenerated cellulose which is withdrawn from the bath, washed with water to remove sulphuric acid and sulphates and plasticized by treatment with an aqueous solution of glycerine or sorbitol. The viscose preferably contains 0À1 to 10À0% of an organo-silicon compound (preferably a silicone oil) based on the cellulose content of the viscose. The viscose may have a ball fall viscosity of 50 to 60 at 20‹ C. and a ripeness of 45 to 50 (E-number). The tubular structures made by the process of the invention are stated to be particularly suitable for use as dialysis membranes in artificial kidneys.
