Abstract
Artificial filaments, films and the like are prepared by extruding into an aqueous precipitating medium, a solution of viscose containing a small proportion of an ethylene oxide polymer having a molecular weight of at least 6000. The amount of ethylene oxide polymer used is of the order of 0.01 per cent. In examples: (1) viscose containing 0.01 per cent of an ethylene oxide polymer having a molecular weight of 8400 is extruded into a spinning bath comprising sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate and zinc sulphate; (2) viscose containing 0.01 per cent of ethylene oxide polymer having a molecular weight of 8400 is extruded with a jet stretch ratio of 2 : 1 into a bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, zinc sulphate and glucose; and (3) viscose containing 0.01 per cent of an ethylene oxide polymer having a molecular weight of 6000 is extruded into a bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate and zinc sulphate.
