Abstract

Artificial filaments, films, etc. are produced by extruding a solution of viscose into a precipitating medium containing a condensation product of an aliphatic alcohol an anhydroderivative thereof or a sugar with ethylene oxide. The product has at least nine ethylene oxide units per molecule and is free from groups more hydrophobic than a hydrocarbon radical of 5 carbon atoms. Suitable alcohols from which the condensation product is derived include methyl, ethyl, propyl, and isopropyl alcohols, polyhydric alcohols such as glycols, glycerol, and erythritol, pentahydric alcohols, hexahydric alcohols such as mannitol, sorbitol, and dulcitol, heptahydric alcohols, and anhydroderivatives such as glycide, mannitan, sorbitan, mannide and sorbide. Sugars such as glucose or sucrose may also be included. Substituted alcohols may be used provided any substituent does not impart to the condensation product a group more hydrophobic than a hydrocarbon radical of 5 carbon atoms. The invention ensures uniformity in product and reduces any tendency of the filaments to break during spinning, particularly when high spinning speeds are employed and when the spinning solution contains a high proportion of combined carbon disulphide. Numerous examples are given in which the spinning bath contains condensation products of ethylene oxide with mannitol, glycerol, glucose, and sulrose along with sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, zinc sulphate and glucose. The number of ethylene oxide units per molecule of condensation product may be more than 50 and in one example it is 300.
