Abstract

Shaped articles such as threads, films, ribbons, plates, tubes and rods are prepared from compositions containing a polyvinyl chloride of high molecular weight and a cyclic acetal derived from formaldehyde and a dihydric alcohol, the acetal being removed before the final preparations of the product. Suitable acetates include those prepared from ethylene glycol, 1 : 2-propylene glycol or 1 : 3-butylene glycol and formaldehyde. In examples polyvinyl chloride is mixed with (1) the acetal derived from ethylene glycol and formaldehyde with or without the addition of methylene chloride, and the solution after filtration and de-aeration is worked into films or, by dry spinning, into threads; (2) the acetal derived from 1 : 2-propylene glycol and formaldehyde and with dichlorodiphenyl and the product worked up into a shaped product.
