Abstract

The surface adhesiveness of articles, particularly films, foils and similar sheet-like materials, comprising at least superficially artificial substances, such as cellulose derivatives, is reduced by incorporating therein or applying thereto a translucent or transparent insoluble substance. The insoluble substance is preferably in finely divided or colloidal form. It may be incorporated with the cellulose derivative before adding the solvent, or it may be incorporated with some of the solvent and then mixed with the bulk of the dope. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose acetate, nitrate or other ester or ethyl cellulose or other ether. Plasticizers, pigments, and effect materials may be incorporated in the film forming solutions. If desired, the transparent or translucent substance may be applied to the surface of the film preferably while the surface is in a softened condition. Aluminium hydroxide, amorphous diatomaceous silica, "superfloss," glass powder, and mercerized cellulose fibres are specified as suitable transparent or translucent substances. In an example, a film is obtained from a solution of cellulose acetate in acetone containing dimethyl phthalate, dimethoxy ethyl phthalate, triphenyl phosphate, and aluminium hydroxide which may contain moisture or may have been dehydrated with alcohol. In another example, a film is obtained from a solution of cellulose acetate in acetone and alcohol containing plasticizers and amorphous diatomaceous silica.
