Abstract

Stencils.-A stencil sheet for use in duplicating is coated with a composition comprising, as the essential gelatinizing constituent, a cellulose derivative, such as a cellulose ester, an hydroxy fatty acid in the free state being included in the composition as tempering-agent. An example of a suitable composition comprises nitrocellulose as the cellulose ester and ricinoleic acid as the tempering-agent; the ratio of nitrocellulose to ricinoleic acid depends on the viscosity of the nitrocellulose solution and is usually from 1 : 10 to 1 : 16 parts by weight. A composition may be prepared by adding 1200 grams of a titanium white pigment and 4000 grams of ricinoleic acid to 6.6 litres of a 6 per cent solution of scrap photographic film dissolved in a mixture comprising one and a half parts by volume of alcohol with one part of ether, and then adding 6 litres of ether-alcohol of the same proportions. Yoshino paper is coated with the composition, and the sheets are dried at atmospheric temperature and at a humidity corresponding with a reading of 50‹ F. on a wet bulb thermometer.
