Abstract

Flexible regenerated cellulose sheets or films are rendered resistant to mould-growth by incorporating in them a monohydric chlor- or brom-phenol of the benzene, toluene, xylene, or cymene series, or a salt of such a compound. The films may be impregnated with an aqueous solution of the mould-inhibiting agent with or without glycerine or other softening agent for the regenerated cellulose and they may be treated during production while still in a gel state or they may be treated subsequently to the first drying. As an alternative, the chlor-or brom-phenol may be incorporated in a coating composition, e.g. a moisture-proofing composition which is then applied over the surface of the regenerated cellulose film. Coating compositions having a basis of cellulose esters or ethers or synthetic resins may be used, e.g. a composition comprising a cellulose derivative, a gum or resin, a wax or wax-like substance, a plasticizer, and a chlor- or bromphenol, may be used. In examples, a regenerated cellulose film in gel form is passed through a warm aqueous bath containing glycerine, and sodium pentachlorphenate or 2.4-dichlorphenol. It is then dried by passage over heated rolls. In other examples, a transparent film of regenerated cellulose containing glycerine is passed through a moistureproofing and mould-inhibiting composition comprising cellulose nitrate, gum dammar, tricresyl phosphate, paraffin wax, 2.4.6 - trichlorphenol, toluene, ethyl alcohol, and n-butyl acetate, or with a similar composition containing 2.4.6-tribromphenol, or with a composition comprising cellulose nitrate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, gum dammar, paraffin wax, 1.3.6-o-chlorcresol, ethyl acetate, toluene, and ethyl alcohol. In other examples, regenerated cellulose film is coated with a composition comprising a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, tricresyl phosphate, paraffin wax, pentachlorphenol or o-chlorthymol and toluene. Specifications 211,446 and 259,690, [both in Class 2 (ii)], are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also the incorporation of the chlor- or brom-phenol or salt thereof in the viscose from which the sheets or films are cast.
