Abstract

Treating a polyvinyl butyral cement with a composition comprising (a) a liquid vehicle comprising both a solvent and a non-solvent for polyvinyl butyral and (b) a body providing agent compatible with polyvinyl butyral and soluble in the liquid vehicle, thus forming an adhesive bond between surfaces coated with said cement. Body providing agents are polyvinyl acetals and polyvinyl butyral is specified. The composition has a viscosity of 200 to 2000 centipoises and comprises 8 to 12 per cent polyvinyl butyral and a liquid vehicle which comprises 20 to 55 per cent solvent and 80 to 45 per cent non-solvent. Solvents specified are methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, methyl acetate, propylene oxide and a methyl acetate-methanol mixture. Non-solvents specified are ethyl ether, isopropyl ether and acetone. In examples, the margin of a leather shoe upper and the margin of a leather sole are roughened. To each is then applied a layer of a polyvinylbutyral cement consisting of polyvinylbutyral, ethanol and triethylene glycol di - 2 - ethyl butyrate as plasticizer. The cement is allowed to dry. This cement is rendered adhesive by treatment with one of the following compositions: (1) and (8) polyvinylbutyral, ethanol, acetone and ethyl ether; (2) and (3) polyvinyl butyral, methyl acetate, ethanol and ethyl ether; (4) polyvinyl butyral, ethanol, methanol, acetone and ethyl ether; (5) polyvinylbutyral, ethanol, propylene oxide, acetone and ethyl ether; (6) polyvinylbutyral, methyl acetate, ethanol, acetone, and ethyl ether; and (7) polyvinyl butyral, ethyl ether and a methanol-methyl acetate mixture.
