[Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group XV] Nitrocellulose or cellulose acetate sheets, films, tubes, or other shapes are rendered plastic so that they may be used for covering or coating wood, metal, or other articles, or so that they may be moulded, by treating them with a liquid containing a mixture of a non-solvent with a halogenated hydrocarbon or halogenated ether converted to a solvent by addition of an agent such as alcohol, and also containing ethylene glycol phthalate. The coating of air screws is excluded. A mixture with alcohol of ethylene dichloride, methylene dichloride, dichlor - ethyl ether, or di - or tri-chloroethylene, may be used as solvent together with toluene, xylene, or petrol as non-solvent, and ethylene glycol phthalate as plasticizer. The plasticity imparted may be controlled by varying the proportion of alcohol, e.g. methylated spirit, in the treatment bath. A sheet of nitrocellulose is treated with the softening solution and then stretched on to a wood or other surface. The wood may be coated first with an adhesive consisting of dissolved nitrocellulose scrap, gum elemi, and acetone. A second layer of adhesive similar to the first but with the gum omitted may be applied, before application of the sheet material. For metals, the adhesive may be a mixture of celluloid in acetone and rubber in toluene and amyl acetate. Specification 552,088, [Group XXXIII], is referred to.
