Abstract

Sheet materials suitable for the manufacture of light-sensitive film &c. are prepared by coating a surface of a support, which surface is substantially unsaponifiable by treatment with alkali, with a layer of saponifiable material by applying a solution or suspension thereof in a volatile solvent, removing the solvent and subsequently saponifying the applied layer in known manner. Specified saponifiable materials are cellulose esters, e.g. cellulose aceto butyrate and cellulose acetate. Suitable base materials (which may be composite) are polyacrylate, polymethacrylate, polystyrene and polycarbonate sheets or films, polyethylene terephthalate which has been coated with a solution in an organic solvent of a halogenated fatty acid and heated, and glass provided with a suitable coating, e.g. of tanned gelatine and an outer layer of polymethylmethacrylate. One example also relates to the use as a support of cardboard coated with methacrylate. The applied saponifiable layer (which may be applied initially by casting, spraying or dipping) may be impregnated with light-sensitive materials, e.g. an aromatic diazo-sulphonate (see Division G2).
