Abstract

786,764. Moisture-proof regenerated cellulose films. BRITISH CELLOPHANE, Ltd. March 15, 1956 [March 29, 1955], No. 9119/55. Class 140. Regenerated cellulose film treated with a polyalkylene imine is coated with a normally solid polyethylene plastic, such as polyethylene having a number average molecular weight (as defined in the Specification) of 14,000-44,000, or polyethylene modified by addition of raw rubber, paraffin wax, resins, dyes, pigments or fillers. The preferred polyalkylene imines are those having a viscosity of about 100 poises in 20 per cent aqueous solution at 20 ‹ C. especially polyethylene imine. The polyalkylene imine may be added to the viscose from which the film is to be formed, or the film while in the gel state may be passed through an aqueous bath contaning the polyalkylene imine. This bath may also contain a softening agent, e.g. glycerine. Alternatively the dried base film may be coated with the polyalkylene imine dissolved in an organic solvent such as ethyl alcohol. The polyethylene may be dissolved, e.g. in a hot chlorinated hydrocarbon and the base film treated with the polyalkylene imine passed through or sprayed with the solution. Preferably the molten polyethylene is extruded as a thin film and immediately laminated on to the base sheet. Specification 766,827 and German Specifications 752,810 and 753,191 are referred to.
