558,100. Resinous polymerization products. FRANKFURTHER, P. April 29, 1942, Nos. 5751/42, 9953/42 and 3746/43. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] [Also in Group VI] An adhesive composition comprises polyvinyl acetate, a colophony or dammar resin or ester gum or lime-hardened colophony and a softener, the resin component amounting to 10-50 per cent. and the softener to 20-200 per cent. by weight of the polyvinyl acetate. Two or more polyvinyl acetates of different viscosity characteristics may be used. Suitable softeners are dibutyl phthalate, benzyl benzoate or triacetin. Hardening agents such as tannic acid and formaldehyde may be added. The composition may be applied to the surfaces to be united in a plastic or molten condition, as a pre-formed film or in solution in acetone, benzene, toluene, methyl or ethyl alcohol, or butyl or amyl acetate. Such solutions may also contain water. Adhesion may be assisted by heat and pressure. Penetration into porous surfaces may be reduced by incorporating a filler such as kaolin in the composition, by applying to the surface an initial coating of the composition which is dried before the subsequent coating or by applying water or a filler or both prior to the adhesive coating. Admixture of the ingredients of the composition may be brought about on the surfaces to be united by supplying one or more of the ingredients separately. The composition may be mixed with leather dust, wood meal, wool waste, cotton wool, sand or kaolin and moulded under heat and pressure. It may be used for impregnating woven or knitted textiles, felt, yarn, string, rope, shoelaces and leather to increase their wearing properties and tear-resistance ; for preventing fraying of button-holes and laddering of knitted stockings ; for coating glass to improve its resistance to splintering ; for securing plaster of Paris to bandages ; and for uniting rubber to rubber or another material.
