Abstract
542,658. Coating surfaces. FRANKFURTHER, P. June 20, 1940, No. 10619. [Class 95] [Also in Groups IV, VIII and X.] The adhesion of a water insoluble polyvinyl ester to another material is improved by subjecting the polymer before or after applying to the surface of the material to the action of tannic acid, by treating the polymer with the tannic acid so as to cause the polymer to harden at the surface of adhesion, or by applying the polymer to the surface in admixture with at least six per cent. of its weight of tannic acid. The polymer, e.g. polyvinyl acetate may be applied by coating the surface of the material with a solution of the polymer in a volatile solvent, or it may be applied in solid form, e.g. in sheet form, and brought into an adhesive state by means of a solvent or heat or both, pressure being applied if desired. The treatment with tannic acid so as to cause the polymer to harden at the surface of adhesion may be effected by (a) applying a solution of tannic acid to the surface of the material, and, after drying, applying a solution or sheet of the polymer, or (b) applying a coating of polymer to the material and then treating the coating with tannic acid so as to harden it throughout, e.g. by applying the tannic acid in the form of a solution in a solvent for the polymer. When the polymer is applied in admixture with the tannic acid, the mixture may take the form of (a) a solution of the polymer in a volatile solvent containing the tannic acid, or (b) solid polymer, e.g. a sheet, having tannic acid incorporated therein. The polymer may form the base of a lacquer or varnish, and may have softening agents, e.g. castor oil, dibutyl phthalate, or diphenyl or benzyl benzoate incorporated therein. The process may be applied to the coating of fabrics, paper, wood, rubber, metal or glass, in adhesively uniting the surfaces of the same or different materials, and to the manufacture of composite glass. It may also be applied to the protection of glass against splintering, with or without the use of reinforcing material, e.g. fabric netting or wires, which may be embedded in the polymer, and with or without an under layer of rubber latex.
