Abstract

The compositions of the parent Specification are modified by comprising 2-25 per cent of natural resin and 6-100 per cent of softener based on the weight of the polyvinyl acetate, emulsified in a quantity of water exceeding 25 per cent by weight of the emulsion. A hardening agent, when present, may amount to 0.5-10 per cent by weight of the polyvinyl acetate. The term "polyvinyl acetate" includes copolymers of vinyl acetate with other polymerizable vinyl compounds, e.g. vinyl chloride. Suitable softeners are dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, triacetin and glycerine in conjunction with another softener. From 25-230 per cent of rubber latex based on the weight of polyvinyl acetate may be added. The emulsions may be prepared in any suitable manner using turkey red oil or sulphonated neat's-foot oil as emulsifying agents. Stabilizers, for the rubber, e.g. ammonia, formaldehyde or a casein solution, wetting agents or fillers, e.g. zinc oxide and kaolin, may be added. In the Provisional Specification, the proportions of natural resin and softener are given as 4-50 per cent and 8-200 per cent by weight of polyvinyl acetate respectively.ALSO:Rubber latex may be added to compositions comprising polyvinyl acetate, a natural resin in an amount of from 2-25 per cent. and a softener for the polyvinyl acetate in an amount of from 6-100 per cent. by weight of the polyvinyl acetate, emulsified in a quantity of water exceeding 25 per cent. of the weight of the emulsion. The rubber may be present in an amount of from 25-230 per cent. of the weight of the polyvinyl acetate. The emulsions may be prepared in any suitable manner using Turkey red oil or sulphonated neats' foot oil as emulsifying agent. The term "polyvinyl acetate" includes copolymers of vinyl acetate with other polymerisable vinyl compounds, e.g., vinyl chloride. Natural resins include colophony, damar, or an ester gum or a lime hardened colophony resin and mixtures of these may be used. Suitable softeners are dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, triacetin, and glycerine in conjunction with another softener. Solvents such as benzene and xylene may be added, together with rubber stabilisers, e.g., ammonia, formaldehyde or a casein solution, wetting agents or fillers, e.g., zinc oxide or kaolin. The emulsions are used as adhesives.
