Abstract

Polymeric materials of high impact strength are prepared by polymerizing a vinyl benzene compound at 50-120 DEG C. in the presence of a non-crystallizable linear polymer of one or more alpha-olefins of formula CH2 = CHR (where R is an alkyl group) or of a copolymer thereof with ethylene, or a peroxide or hydroperoxide of the polymer or copolymer. It is preferred that the peroxide derivative has an oxygen content of from 0.1 to 1%, and that when a polymer or copolymer is used it is dissolved in the vinyl benzene compound before polymerization in amount from 5 to 20% based on the vinyl benzene compound. An aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene may be present. Specified as a vinyl benzene compound is styrene while propylene, butylene, their copolymer and ethylene-propylene copolymer are also specified.
