Abstract

Surfaces of metal, wood, glass, rubber and plastics are bonded together by interposing between them a mixture of polyvinyl acetate and/or polyvinyl acetal and a phenol-aldehyde type resin in the resol stage and curing the phenol-aldehyde resin to its infusible and insoluble form. A solution of the two resins may be applied to one or both of the surfaces and heat applied to cure the adhesive with or without prior evaporation of the solvent. Alternatively, one of the resins may be applied in solution or in liquid form to one or both surfaces and the other applied as a powder. Further, the mixed resins may be applied between the surfaces as a powder, foil or sheet or impregnated into paper or woven glass fibre fabric. Curing agents, e.g. additional aldehyde or hexamethylene tetramine, polymerization catalysts, plasticisers and fillers may be added to the mix. In examples: (1) a solution in ethylene dichloride and methyl alcohol of a mixture of "Novolak" (Registered Trade Mark), polyvinyl formal and hexamethylene tetramine is applied to aluminium alloy surfaces, the solvent evaporated, the surfaces brought together and heated under pressure at 150 DEG -170 DEG C.; (2) a dehydrated liquid resol is applied to similar alloy surfaces. Powdered polyvinyl formal is sprinkled on the tacky surfaces which are brought together and similarly heated under pressure; (3) a woven glass fabric impregnated with the solution of (1) above is laid between similar metal surfaces which are then heated under pressure; (4) a polyvinyl formal-resol solution is used to join metal tubes.
