Abstract
Plastic surfaces are temporarily protected by applying an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl alcohol of low surface tension and drying to leave a thin uniform film of polyvinyl alcohol which is peeled from the surface when protection is no longer required. Preferably, the aqueous emulsion also contains a wetting agent and a plasticizer, and, if it is desired to harden the resulting film, may also contain formaldehyde, chromium compounds, dibasic acids, copper-ammonium or zinc-ammonium compounds. The emulsion may be applied by dipping, brushing or spraying and the film removed by use of an embedded rip cord, or an attached tab or by moistening of a corner. The method is particularly useful for the temporary protection during manufacture of the polymethyl methacrylate panels used in aircraft. A specified aqueous emulsion contains polyvinyl alcohol, alcohol, glycerine and a wetting agent (the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid). The emulsion may also be coloured by the addition of a dye, e.g. methyl orange.
