Abstract

Sheets or films of highly polymeric colloids, particularly cellulose derivatives and albuminous substances, are subjected to extraction, subsequently to their manufacture, with an indifferent non-aqueous liquid, which has only a feeble swelling action and contains no softening agent for the colloid, until the solvent and any softening agent retained by the sheet after manufacture are completely or almost completely removed. In examples, (1) a film made from a solution containing nitrocellulose, camphor, ether, and alcohol is extracted with ether; (2) a film made from a solution of cellulose nitroacetate in benzene, acetone, and triphenyl phosphate is extracted with ether; (3) methanol is used to extract a film made from a solution containing cellulose acetate, benzene, and acetone; (4) a film made as in (3) but containing tricresyl phosphate is extracted with methanol; (5) a cellulose triacetate film containing toluenesulphamide, made from a solution in dichlormethane and methanol is extracted with ether; and (6) a gelatine film is extracted with methanol.
