Abstract

Cellulosic films are softened by means of a high-boiling softening agent belonging to one of the four classes mentioned below, and which is appreciably water-soluble and has a hygroscopicity of from 1 to 80. The four classes of substances are compounds containing (a) both ether and ester groups, (b) keto and ester groups with or without ether groups, (c) hydroxyl and ester groups with or without ether groups, but which do not contain more than one hydroxyl group for each ester group, and (d) compounds of carbamic acid esterified with an alcohol containing an ether group. A number of compounds of each class are specified. By a hygroscopicity of 80, is meant that the substance will absorb 80 per cent of its weight of water when exposed in a thin layer to an atmosphere of 95 per cent relative humidity at a temperature of 25 DEG C. over a period of 120 hours. The cellulosic films so treated should have a degree of deformation not in excess of 3,0 when measured in the machine or longitudinal direction of the film. By degree of deformation is meant the percentage change in length of a strip of film, in equilibrium in an atmosphere of 95 per cent relative humidity at 35 DEG C., when it is allowed to reach equilibrium in a dry atmosphere at the same temperature. The softener employed should have a boiling point not less than 135 DEG C. at a pressure of 12 mm. of mercury. The softener may be applied to the film from aqueous solution or from an aqueous solution containing small amounts of water-miscible organic solvents, e.g. methanol, ethanol or acetone. The process is applicable to the treatment of foils from viscose, cuprammonium cellulose solutions, or aqueous alkaline solutions of cellulose glycollic acid, glycol cellulose, lowly etherified or lowly esterified celluloses. In an example, a gel sheet of regenerated cellulose is impregnated with a 4 per cent aqueous solution of bis-ethoxyethyl malate and dried. It has a deformation of 2,3 compared with 4,0 to 4,4 for glycerol. Specification 439,084 is referred to.
