Abstract

Cellulose esters which swell in water or are soluble in aqueous organic solvents having a high content of water are obtained by subjecting a solution containing water of a partially hydrolysed cellulose ester to further hydrolysis by means of a substance of alkaline action in water or in an aqueous organic solvent, in a proportion such that the ester does not precipitate from the solution. Methanol, acetone, dioxane, or glycol monomethyl ether, or a mixture of these liquids may be mixed with water and used as the solvent for the partially hydrolysed cellulose ester which is to be treated. Caustic alkalies, or organic bases such as pyridine or ethanolamine may be used as hydrolysing agent. Cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, benzoate, acetate-laurate, or acetate-benzoate, or a cellulose ether-ester may be treated. The products may be dissolved in organic solvents containing at least 50 per cent of water. They may be used for coating gelatine layers to be used as eye-pieces for gas masks or for making bodies capable of swelling for medicinal purposes. They may be used for making photographic films.
