Abstract

Coloured film scrap, celluloid, and like gelatinized and plasticized cellulose derivative material is decolourized by treating with an aqueous solution of an organic solvent so as to produce softening and swelling of the material, removing this solution and rinsing, and then treating the material with a bleaching agent containing chlorine, such as chlorine gas, chlorine water, or a hypochlorite, in presence of water. The swelling agent may be a low molecular organic acid such as formic or acetic acid. Coloured photographic films or wrapping foils of cellulose esters or ethers such as nitrocellulose, acetyl cellulose, or benzyl cellulose may be treated. The swelling solution may be used again for treating fresh quantities of cellulose derivative material. Specification 326,471, [Class 15 (i)], is referred to.
