Abstract

The processes for the manufacture of filaments, films &c. from cellulose acetates and other organic acid esters of cellulose or of cellulose esters as described in the parent Specification and in Specifications 340,436 and 340,437, are modified by employing for the coagulation baths or as the baths with which the coagulated materials are treated directly on emergence from the coagulation baths, liquid non-solvents which are plasticizers for the cellulose esters and ethers, such as tri-aryl phosphates, alkyl phthalates and aryl sulphonamides. The plasticizers may constitute the whole of the coagulation &c. liquid, and in order to secure this a mixture of plasticizers which produce a liquid, may be employed; and with the plasticizers there may be mixed solvents or non-solvents or both solvents and non-solvents for the cellulose derivative, but in such mixtures the plasticizers should be present in high proportions, say of 60-90 per cent. In examples, acetone solutions of cellulose acetate are spun into tricresyl phosphate-acetone and diethyl phthalate-acetone mixtures. According to the Provisional Specification any swelling agent which is a non-solvent may be used. Specifications 177,868 and 179,234, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], also are referred to.
