Abstract

Artificial filaments, threads, yarns, ribbons and the like are obtained by extruding a solution of a cellulose ester or ether in a neutral solvent, mixture of solvents, or solvent mixture, into a coagulating medium containing a high concentration of the same solvent, mixture of solvents, or solvent mixture, together with a non-solvent, the solvent or at least one constituent of the mixture of solvents or solvent mixture having a boiling point not less than that of the non-solvent of the coagulating medium or being not more volatile than the non-solvent under the conditions obtaining. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose acetate, formate, propionate, butyrate, or nitro-acetate, methyl, ethyl, or benzyl cellulose, or a cellulose ether ester. The solvent may be glycol mono-acetate, methyl glycol mono-acetate, diacetone alcohol, ethyl lactate, diethyl tartrate, dioxane, methylene ethylene dioxide, or dioxane dicarbinol. The non-solvent of the coagulating bath may be water, alcohol, or a hydrocarbon. Salts or sugars, or lubricants such as oils, may be added to the coagulating bath. The lustre of the products is increased by raising the concentration of the solvent in the coagulating bath. A non-solvent in proportions up to that which just fails to cause precipitation may be added to the spinning solution. The products may be stretched continuously with production. The products are freed from the coagulating liquid by washing with water, salt solutions, or solutions of solvents of lower concentration than those adhering to the products, or by evaporation. In an example, cellulose acetate dissolved in dioxane is spun into a 50 per cent aqueous solution of dioxane and the bundle of filaments is passed under a guide and round a draw-roller. The filaments pass to washing and drying devices and are then wound or twisted. The Provisional Specification describes also the employment of coagulating baths containing low concentrations of solvent.
