Abstract
In wet-spinning processes for the production of artificial filaments, threads, ribbons, films, &c. from organic derivatives of cellulose, coagulation is effected by means of coagulating media of high solvent power and containing lower aliphatic acids together with relatively high boiling solvents for the cellulose derivative. The coagulating medium may also contain a soluble salt or other substance capable of reducing the solubility of the aliphatic acid and/or relatively high boiling solvent in the non-solvent constituent of the coagulating medium, examples of such substances being sodium acetate (and soluble salts in general), sugars, and other polyhydric alcohols. The lustre of the products may be modified by modifying the relative proportions of the aliphatic acid and the salt or the like in the coagulating medium. Suitable relatively high boiling solvents mentioned are ethyl lactate, diacetone alcohol, diethyl tartrate, mono- and diacetin, glycol monoacetate, glycol diacetate, and methyl glycol monoacetate. Solvents or swelling agents of low boiling point may also be contained, in the coagulating medium, e.g. acetone, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and alcohol. Water is preferred as the nonsolvent constituent of the coagulating medium, but benzene, toluene, and other liquid hydrocarbons are also mentioned. The spinning solution itself may contain any desired solvent and/or nonsolvent and/or high boiling solvent for the cellulose derivative. The solvents retained in or upon the filaments &c. after emergence from the coagulating medium may be removed by suitable means, or if desired, a certain proportion of such solvents may be allowed to remain therein. The process permits of the application of a relatively high draw-down or stretch to the materials, so that very fine filaments are obtained. Examples are given in which solutions of cellulose acetate are spun into baths containing acetic acid, ethyl lactate and sodium acetate. Specifications 332,187, 338,490, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], 341,148, 341,897, 343,949, 346,678, 346,793, 366,110, 371,343, 375,424, and 378,858 are referred to.
