Abstract
Films, foils, sheets, and like products are made from solutions of cellulose esters or ethers in organic solvents with the aid of coagulating baths comprising aqueous, alcoholic, or aqueous alcoholic solutions of aliphatic polyhydroxy compounds or esters or ethers thereof which compounds have no solvent action at ordinary temperatures on the cellulose derivatives. The coagulating baths may contain low concentrations of solvents for the cellulose derivatives. The use of baths containing emulsifying agents, and processes in which at least part of the coagulating medium moves so as to exert a drag on the films, are excluded. The polyhydroxy compound may be glycol, glycerol, sugars, acetates or benzoates of sugars, erythritol, mannitol, sorbitol, mannitan diacetate, water-soluble starch esters, or cellulose degradation products. The composition, or concentration of the spinning solutions and of the coagulating baths may be adjusted so that the differences between the specific gravities are not so great as to cause interference in the process of film formation. The film-forming solution may contain solvents of high or low boiling point, plasticisers, and nonsolvent diluents. Stretching may be performed during coagulation. Coagulation may be effected in stages or the films may be extruded into a liquid containing a high proportion of a polyhydric compound and having a low solvent power for the solvent of the film-forming solution, and liquid which is a solvent for the solvent of the film-forming solution may be added at points along the path of the film so as progressively to increase the coagulating power of the bath. In an example, cellulose acetate dissolved in acetone, triacetin, and ethylacetate is extruded in the form of a film which is received on a drum rotating in a coagulating bath of glycerol and water. The film is washed with salt solution and then with water before being dried. Specifications 343,062, 375,424, 400,589, and 405,692 are referred to.
