Abstract

Primary chloroform-soluble cellulose acetate is dissolved in concentrated formic acid with or without the addition of an alkyl formate, and extruded or cast to form filaments, films or tubes which are coagulated in water or aqueous salt solutions. The cellulose acetate used preferably contains at least 59 per cent of acetic acid. In an example, filaments are prepared by coagulation of a solution prepared as above in water. In another example, the solution is spread on a surface to form a film which is coagulated in water, stripped, and washed free from acid. The film may be passed into a solution or dispersion of a plasticizer, dried under tension and calendered between hot rolls. In a third example, bottle capsules are prepared by dipping suitable formers into a solution of triacetate in formic acid containing a small quantity of methyl formate, and the coating coagulated in water. The capsules may be treated in a bath containing plasticizers, then retained moist until ready for use.
