Abstract
328,911. British Celanese, Ltd., Dickie, W. A., and Sowter, P. F. C. Nov. 5, 1928. Cellulose esters and ethers, processes for making filaments and films from.-Filaments, threads, ribbons, films, and other products consisting of or containing cellulose derivatives and containing water-soluble salts, e.g. products prepared by the method of Specification 177,868 or 179,234 and containing thiocyanate or zinc chloride, are freed from the soluble salts without loss of lustre by effecting the treatment of the products with aqueous media, e.g. washing, bleaching, or dyeing media, in the presence of lustre-preserving or relustring agents (cf. Specifications 246,879, 259,265 and 259,266). Such agents may be salts, sugars, and solvents or swelling agents for the cellulose derivatives, e.g. sodium chloride or acetate, pctassium or ammonium chloride or sulphate. diacetone alcohol, diethyl tartrate, ethyl lactate and the acetins. Washing with a salt solution is preferably followed by washing with water or with a solution containing a solvent for the cellulose derivative, but washing with a solution containing a solvent or latent solvent for the derivative need not be followed by washing with water. According to the examples, (1) a cellulose acetate thread spun in an aqueous ammonium thiocyanate bath is carried directly into a washing bath comprising an aqueous sodium chloride solution kept in continuous flow, and is then wound in a centrifugal box in which it is washed by a slow stream or a succession of drops of water; (2) a thread spun as in example 1 is wound on perforated bobbins and washed with an aqueous ammonium sulphate solution, the concentration of which is gradually reduced; (3) a thread spun as in example 1 is hanked or wound cm bobbins and immersed until free from thiocyanate in an aqueous solution of diacetone alcohol, the excess of which is afterwards removed. Reference is made also to the treatment of products consisting of or maintaining cellulose formate, propionate, or butyrate, or methyl, ethyl, or benzyl cellulose.
