Abstract

Shrinkable bottle caps are obtained by coating a former with a solution of a fully esterified cellulose ester in an acetal, coagulating the coating, and removing the solidified cap from the former. Acetals formed from acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and other aldehydes may be employed. Fillers, pigments, dyestuffs, and plasticizers may be added to the solution. The former may be dipped into the cellulose ester solution, slowly withdrawn, and then immersed in a coagulating bath. The solidified cap is then removed and washed. Water, alcohol, and mixtures of water and alcohol, may be used as coagulating liquid. Alcohol, when used, may be washed out and replaced by water. When the caps are stored in water, the pliability of the caps is increased if the water contains a small amount of plasticizer such as an acetin. In an example, cellulose triacetate is dissolved in a mixture of ethylene glycol formal and alcohol. Formers are dipped in the solution and the adherent layer is coagulated by washing in alcohol until most of the solvent is removed. The caps are detached from the former, placed in water, and stored in water or in a moist atmosphere.
