Abstract

To obtain non-tarnished films, artificial threads and other articles capable of taking a dye, from cellulose nitrate, acetate, butyrate, and other esters of cellulose, there is added to a solution of the ester in a relatively volatile organic solvent a small quantity of a non-volatile organic solvent soluble in water, and after forming the thread, films, &c. by the evaporation of the volatile solvent, the non-volatile solvent is extracted by washing with water. As non-volatile solvent the following are employed-formamide, acetamide, chloral and chloral hydrate; while the volatile solvent may be methyl, ethyl, butyl or amyl formate or acetate, together with methyl or ethyl alcohol.
