Abstract
Cellulose nitro-carboxylates are prepared by treating a cellulose fatty-acid ester having free hydroxyl groups with p diacetyl orthonitric acid and a dehydrating agent; the diacetyl orthonitric acid may be previously made or formed in the reaction mixture. The degree of nitration is chiefly determined by the amount of dehydrating agent added. According to the examples, (1) diacetyl cellulose is dissolved in a mixture of diacetyl orthonitric acid and glacial acetic acid, and the solution is treated with acetic anhydride and acetic acid while cooling and stirring; the mixed ester is precipitated with water; it is soluble in acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, diacetone alcohol, and a mixture of benzene, alcohol, and acetone; (2) a cooled solution of cellulose dibutyrate in the diacetyl orthonitric acid is treated with acetic anhydride, and the mixed ester then precipitated by addition of water; it is soluble in acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, diacetone alcohol, methyl or ethyl glycol acetate, ethyl or butyl acetate, and mixtures of these with alcohol or benzene; (3) cellulose dipropionate is treated as in example 2; the product is soluble in acetone, diacetone alcohol, ethyl glycol acetate, methyl or ethyl acetate, or mixtures of these with alcohol or benzene. Specification 283,595, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to Specification 10706/12, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. This reference does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
