Abstract

In the production of films, wrappings, sheets, threads, plastic compositions, and moulded articles from organic cellulose esters that are insoluble in acetone, the citric acid ester of an aliphatic or hydroaromatic alcohol is incorporated into the cellulose ester. The citric acid ester may constitute as much as 60 per cent of the whole composition. Examples of suitable esters are amyl citrate, butyl citrate, cyclohexyl citrate, or amyl dibutyl citrate. A highly flexible film containing 25 per cent citric acid ester may be prepared by spreading on a roller or endless band a solution containing 15 parts by weight of cellulose triacetate, 72 parts of methylene chloride, 8 parts of ethyl alcohol and 5 parts of triamyl citrate. A suitable silk spinning mixture consists of 100 parts cellulose triacetate, 350 parts methylene chloride, 75 parts of alcohol and 15 parts of triamyl citrate, and a composition suitable for making a film consists of 30 parts of cellulose triacetate, 120 parts of methylene chloride, 20 parts of ethyl alcohol, and 9 parts of cyclo-hexyl citrate. Compositions may be made suitable for use in the electrical industry.
