Abstract
Cellulose esters of organic acids are dispersed in a solvent medium which is also capable of swelling the cellulosic filler and/or is capable of combining chemically with the inorganic filler used. Examples of such dispensing agents are solutions of halides or thiocyanates of metals belonging to Groups 1, 2 or 3 of the Periodic Classification, in water, aqueous alcohol, organic acids or their anhydrides. As suitable cellulosic fillers cotton cellulose, lignocelluloses, wood products, and cork are mentioned, while suitable inorganic fillers are oxides of zinc, magnesium or calcium, cement, and plaster of Paris. The compositions may be formed into sheets, rods, tubes, and the like. In an example, cellulose acetate is dispersed in a solution of zinc chloride and mixed with zinc oxide. The composition is pressed into sheets which are heated, washed, and treated with solutions of fireproofing agents. When a highly polished surface is required, the sheet is dipped into a mixture of acetone, methylated spirit, methyl glycol and triacetin, dried and hot pressed between polished nickel plates. In another example, cellulose acetate is dispersed in a solution of zinc chloride and mixed with fine sawdust which has been digested with a solution of zinc chloride. Zinc oxide is then mixed in and the product treated as in the first example or rolled into thin sheets which are laminated with layers of fibre or fabric.
