Abstract

In order to counteract the tendency for deposits to form on the spinneret and eventually to block the orifices, a small proportion, e.g. 0.0001 to 0.05 per cent of a polymerized alkylene oxide is dissolved in a viscose spinning solution or in the coagulating bath. The alkylene oxide preferably has a degree of polymerization exceeding 30. Polymers of ethylene oxide or homologues of ethylene oxide containing alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl radicals may be used. The viscose spinning solution may contain delustrants, casein or other protein, or other additional ingredients. In an example, viscose is extruded into a bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate, and zinc sulphate, and about 0.005 per cent of polymerized ethylene oxide. Instead of polyethylene oxide there may be used polymerized propylene oxide or polymerized nonaethylene glycol. The spinneret may be made of gold, platinum-gold, platinum-rhodium, palladium-gold, tantalum, or artificial ruby.
