Abstract

Filaments of regenerated cellulose rayon having a high degree of polymerization are produced by xanthating alkali cellulose with a mixture of carbon disulphide and a surface-active agent in the presence of a monoamine, dissolving the resulting cellulose xanthate in dilute aqueous alkali, extruding the resulting viscose into a spinning bath containing up to 20 grams per litre of sulphuric acid or up to 50 grams per litre of oxalic acid, or containing a mixture of up to 15 grams per litre of sulphuric acid and up to 30 grams per litre of oxalic acid, but containing no zinc sulphate, care being taken to ensure that the content of sodium ions which accumulate in the bath during the spinning process does not exceed 20 grams per litre, and then immersing the filaments formed in the spinning bath in a secondary bath containing not more than 15 grams per litre of sulphuric acid. Suitable monoamines are those having the general formula: R1R2R3N in which at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is an alkyl radical and the remainder are H atoms, e.g. triethylamine, and suitable surface active agents are turkey-red oil and polyoxyethylene alkylamino ethers in which the alkyl group has 6-10 carbon atoms. The weight of amine used may be 0,5%-4,0% by weight based on the weight of the starting material, e.g. wood pulp. The viscose preferably has a viscosity of more than 200 sec. (as measured by the ball-drop method). The filaments may be stretched in the spinning bath on a stepped godet and are then passed through the secondary bath, which may be maintained at an elevated temperature, either under tension or without tension. Specifications 652,746, 654,083 and 730,226 are referred to.
